Totalitarian Autrocities

As examples of totalitarian autocracies, fascism and communism have held prominent places in world history since they were first c erstived of and implemented on a major scale. After the atrocities committed the Soviet Union and national socialist Germany, both terms generally conjure up difficult negative associations and have come to represent the worst form of abuses and behavior that human beings are capable of. Despite radically different ideas and approaches to power, the reality of both fascism and communism, I argue, has also resulted in autocracies. While both ideologies have also resulted in wicked crimes against humanity, I will also argue that, purely as ideas, fascism and communism have been misunderstood and misrepresented, often by those who take aim to be acting in their name.

The ideals of communism are establish on the writings and philosophies of Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels and their attempts to bring justice to the impoverished press down class (Marxism and Amorality, 2002). The basic premise of communism is one that is hard-fought to argue against, namely that working class citizens deserves proper wages, more power, and justice more generally. The working classor proletariat, as Engels calls them (1914, sect. 2)are, after all, the people that do the hard work and nettlesome jobs which enables society to function.



They are the the foundation upon which any societys wealth and productivity is built (Marxism and Amorality, 2002). Yet, unjustly, the proletariat have to beat and live well below the living standards of the middle and speed classes. In his Principles of Communism, Engels offers this sobering quip: The slave is sold once and for all; the proletarian must sell himself daily and periodic (1914, sect. 6). Even in Utopia, Thomas Mores heroic view of an optimally functioning society, the pure practice of commie doctrines should result in peaceful ends in which all members of a society are equal and provided for.
